ABOUT THE YOUNG GURU SCHOLARSHIP
We are proud to have partnered with the Young Guru Foundation and NGO Heal the Hood to facilitate the funding of a student to study a one-year, full time Higher Certificate in Sound Production at our campus in Cape Town. Young Guru launched the scholarship when he visited our campus to present a series of workshops – you can watch two videos of his trip below.
Congratulations to Abulele Ndenze from Gugulethu in Cape Town who was recently awarded the 2013 Young Guru Scholarship.

DJ YOUNG GURU
Revered as The Sound of New York, Gimel Keaton, better known as Young Guru, has more than a decade of experience in sound engineering, production, and A&R for the acclaimed Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. Most recognised for shaping some of the biggest talent in Hip Hop, Young Guru has mixed 10 of Jay-Z’s 11 albums, and has earned himself a number of shout-outs on Jay-Z’s tracks paying homage to his exceptional skills behind the boards.
“The main purpose of coming here (SAE Capetown) was to set up a scholarship. It goes beyond just “Hey I’m Young Guru and I have some Grammys'”, the purpose is for me to give back as much information as possible. I don’t want it be a one time thing, to come in and give out a scholarship and leave, then there’s press about it. I want it to be a real thing that goes on every year.”
The Young Guru Foundation seeks to shape a brighter future for communities by providing financial support through the Young Guru Scholarship to students pursuing careers in Communications, Audio Engineering, Music Education and Music Business.
In addition to providing financial assistance for post-secondary education, The Young Guru Foundation assists in mentoring and advising students from junior high school through graduate school, by coordinating internship and work/study opportunities.
Young Guru sees this foundation as an opportunity that derived from his passion for teaching what he knows best, the aesthetic of sound. Looking deeper into the need for substantial involvement, The YGF will facilitate guidance and support focusing on Young Guru’s passion for the cause to further young hopeful leaders of the art.
