Overview

Introduction

This course introduces the learner to the fundamental principles of sound and audio technologies related to both sound recording, production and live sound reinforcement. It explores the physical properties and characteristics of sound and the human auditory perception thereof.

The behaviour of sound and human auditory perception is examined in order to provide a solid foundation for further studies in the recording, manipulation, control, reproduction and reinforcement of sound.

The science of sound is studied, including the mathematical principles, electronic concepts and theories that relate to the propagation of sound.

Skills

What will I learn?

  • Describe the essential and foundational properties of sound.
  • Describe the principle and use of Equal Loudness Contours.
  • Describe and apply decibel theory.
  • Define the principle of Ohm’s law.
  • Solve circuit questions using Ohm’s law.
  • Define the principle of electrical power.
  • Define the terms and concepts of voltage, current and resistance.
  • Define the principles of microphone transduction.
  • Describe the types and practical use of different polar patterns
