Introduction

The aim of this short course is to provide a learner with the skills needed to develop simple stories and complex storyboards for mainly narrative media. It will examine traditional elements of scriptwriting and the challenge of applying these to animation media storyboarding.

Learners will be introduced to generic formatting conventions for storyboards and scripts for animation film and television. They will also be required to complete basic research on practice related topics.

  • Demonstrate the various phases of the script and storyboard development process.
  • Apply and execute the telling of a story through illustration, a storyboard and an animatic of a short narrative animation.

  • Communicate to diverse audiences through clear, logically presented works and planned, spoken presentations.
  • Research and critically comment on storyboarding practice and display an advanced understanding of visual narrative.
  • Demonstrate the cycles of storyboards, illustration and scripts for animation and other visual narratives.
  • Be able to use various templates for storyboarding and illustration, and explore the use of techniques such as framing, cuts, time, depth, and light.
