COURSE OVERVIEW

The Higher Certificate in Sound Production curriculum equips students with the necessary practical skills, knowledge, values and attitudes required to enter the broad scope of the global music and entertainment industries and operate effectively as audio professionals.

The curriculum covers a wide range of applied skills and knowledge in music theory, music business, audio technology, electronic music production, sound for film and television, final mastering and live sound. The programme culminates in a final creative project where students get the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge to a production of their choice, which is evaluated on professional practice, technical aptitude and creativity.


Course Aims:

Graduates of the SAE Sound Production Course are able to operate a wide range of professional industry standard equipment, studio effects processors, operate analogue and digital consoles and hard disc recording systems. Graduates have a fundamental knowledge of mixdown techniques, studio procedures, production techniques, basic studio acoustics and music business. Graduates of this course have recorded and mixed several music productions, completed a comprehensive post production project, programmed MIDI arrangements and worked extensively with ProTools and other digital editing systems.

Entry requirements

Basic Entry Requirements

  • A National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent academic learning of an NQF 4 qualification or higher, with university exemption/endorsement.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Adequate hearing abilities & adequately sighted.
English Language Proficiency

Successful applicants for all courses must be proficient in written and spoken English.

In case of TOEFL or IELTS testing, students must score:

  • 6.0 on IELTS
  • 550 on TOEFL (paper-based)
  • 213 on TOEFL (computer-based)
  • 79 (Internet based)

If an applicant is a native English speaker or has studied in the medium of English on a secondary or post-secondary level, then the English language test requirement may be waived.
